David, Leblanc seems to do a little better job of setting up their
instruments than Buffet. We sell tons of student line clarinets where I
work, and I have to go thru every one of them to make sure the adjustments
are up to par. It is possible the store that sold the clarinet to your
student sees to it that every instrument that goes out the door is in
perfect shape. It takes lots of time to do this, but it's something that has
to be done if you want to establish, and keep a, reputation for excellence.
Unfortunately, the quality control at some instrument makers is not what it
should be. For about a two year period the Emerson student line flutes were
unplayable when they came to us from the factory. I have spend up to two
hours adjusting them so they could be sold. We tried sending them back when
they wouldn't play, but they were returned in no better shape. Here lately
they seem to have gotten their act down. Only minor adjustments, or none at
all, are needed before we deliver the instrument to the customer.
