Kenneth,
Being far from a store is no excuse for illegally dubbing
copyrighted material. We have among the finest postal services in the
world in this country (DESPITE its problems), not to mention a plethora of
shippers such as UPS. Therefore, you can simply call up (or have your
parents do it) any store and ask them to ship the requisite recordings out
to you posthaste. How fast you get it only depends on how much you can
afford to spend on the shipping. Same day shipping is indeed expensive
(but sometimes necessary.
What I'm getting at here is that we must support the music
industry. If record companies cannot sell their recordings then they will
not make more. It is simply not good enough to plead inaccessibility or
even poverty (although I'm sure many people will and do). There are many
solutions such as public libraries, interlibrary loans, asking friends to
loan you the recordings, etc.
I play in a Klezmer band (Machaya Klezmer band) which has released
two recordings, now. We have been unusually lucky to have broken even on
both (and even made a few hundred bucks in profit from the first one).
Suffice to say that ALMOST NOONE makes much money on recordings except
Micheal Jackson and record companies are losing money on virtually every
classical album they produce (except for Luciano Pavarotti). So you are
really slighting the performers when you dub recordings instead of buying
them. Think of it as a long-term investment. You'll have these recordings
for decades. How many cents does that come out to over that long term?
