I, also, never got this knowledge in school, and, thus, never knew
it was an option! (I only took private lessons briefly in high school, and
it never came up there, either!). This is one of the topics for which I am
grateful to the klarinet list!
Those of you who are school band instructors should consider this
for your students. Since you're on this list, I would assume you are
clarinetists, but perhaps consider the needs of your other instruments, as
well, and arrange to have "experts" in those instruments have sectionals to
discuss the instruments with your students?
If you're involved with a school music program as a parent,
perhaps you could suggest this to your school music instructors?
Remember that if you don't know the questions, you can't look up
the answers!
