Well, it's not often I join a "me too" but I need some relief from
today...

When I was 3 I had 'flu and pneumonia concurrently (do not try this
at home, children :-) ). This left me with a collapsed lung. I
started on piano at 7 (with an index finger in bandages and splints,
but that's another story...). When I was around 12 I expressed an
interest in learning another instrument. The doctor suggested a wind
instrument, in order to help the development of aforementioned lung
(partly reinflated and amazingly scarred at that time), and 'cos he
thought it might help with the mild asthma. My mother suggested oboe
(her favourite). I said words to the effect of "I don't really mind
what I try, but it's silly to buy another instrument" (my sister had
played clarinet for a while). So, nothing inspirational at all...
C'est la vie, and the rest, as they say, is history.
