Alfred Einstein was a prolific writer and the editor of the third edition
of the Koechel catalog. For a long time (and in some places, to this day),
it was called the "Koechel-Einstein Catalog." He was a specialist in
Mozart and did several wonderful books in which Mozart is either the
centerpiece or a very important figure. His best known book on Mozart
is "Mozart, His Character, His Work" first published in German and later
in English.

He arrived in the US in 1939 and taught in Bennington, VT. He came out
to Berkeley, CA to teach there but died of a heart attack in 1955
or thereabouts and is buried in a small cemetery in El Cerrito. I
know his daughter who is, today, about 90.

He was also a specialist in a number of other non-Mozart related
topics and was the dominant musicologist from Germany for 30 or
40 years. He was not related to Albert Einstein, though they knew
each other and, in Berlin, used to get each other's mail marked
"A. Einstein."

The quotation of 90% perspiration, 10% inspiration is Mark Twain.
