I'll forward this message on to the list again as I don't know if it got =
through, our mail server crashed again. This is really getting =
annoying, I wish they'd fix the darned thing. :)

Message:

I wouldn't say expert, but it's been the main focus of my playing for =
quite a time. If you're looking for some 20th century suggestions that =
"sound nice" here's whatI can think of.

Francaix - Theme and Variations
Hindemith - Sonata or Concerto (the concerto almost requires two =
pianists however)
E. Denisov - Sonata for clarinet and piano (a newer newr work (1991) =
that is very similar to his unaccompanied sonata. He uses =
quarter tones to achieve melodic line, terrific piece)
E. Mandat - Folk Songs or Tricolor Capers
Bernstein - Sonata for clarinet and piano
S. Tanejev - Canzona (there's a reduction for clarinet and string =
quartet if you can find it, about 8 mins. long)
Rudolf Moser - Concerto (written 1960, pretty tonal)
P. Chihara - Sonata for clarinet and piano (very nice tonal work written =
in 1996)
Prokofiev - Sonata op.94 (transcription of the violin/flute sonata, =
highly recommended)
Castelnuovo-Tedesco - Sonata for clarinet and piano (also highly =
recommended)
Kupferman - Moonflowers Baby! (unaccompanied)

That's a partial list and only the stuff which, again, "sounds nice". =
If you want a list of contemporary pieces that sound more "modern" then =
I've got a HUGE list. I tried to get your original list posting so that =
I could see what you had planned already and exactly what it is that you =
wanted. I was unable to do so. If anyone needs any help with musi of =
the twentieth century (particularly music written after 1950) please =
feel free to ask. I'd love to see more of this music being played, so =
I'd be more than happy to help in any way that I can. I wish Eric =
Mandat and Nathan Williams were on this list though, they're two of the =
"biggies" in that world. Let me know if you need anything more and what =
you decide to put on the recital. Good luck Neil.

Regards,
Michael Norsworthy

Neil,

I imagine you've already thought of post-WWII standards like the
Hindemith and the Copland, but here are a few other suggestions for your
recital which fit your criteria:=20

Howard Blake Concerto

Bennett Concerto

Einar Englund Concerto. I'm not sure this has been published yet, but
it's an outstanding piece. Written for Stoltzman in 1991, and recorded
by him on the RCA Victor label..

Muczynski's Time Pieces. Actually, I'm not sure if this is 20 minutes..
But I remember hearing it once and being very impressed with it.=20

That's about all I can think of right now. I think Michael Norsworthy's
the real contemp. music expert on this list, so hopefully he'll have a
few more suggestions. (How about it, Michael?)

Good luck on preparing for your recital!

Rob Teitelbaum
