To my simple brain, as I have been spoon fed over the years, being told to
play what is written means exactly that. Whether it has to do with notes, or
which clarinet to use. That's all I meant. But I think you know that!

Are there extant examples of the extent of improvisation that was done? Are
we speaking of ornamentation? Substituting a melody?
