I studied the poulenc last year with my teacher (Naomi Drucker) and very
little was said to me about alternate fingerings.... Of course it was not
easy but I managed to learn the piece and perform it using mainly standard
fingerings and some standard alternates. Then I went up to Tanlgewood for
the summer and studied with Ethan Sloane, who suggested strange alternate
fingerings in almost every note. While these fingerings may have worked well
for someone who was used to them, my fingers simply wouldn't do it with
proper facility or technique. I would think this would be the case for most,
as the fingerings were very unusual.
