Subject: Ralph McLane recording

The great clarinetist Ralph McLane can be heard on a new reissue =
of
the Dvorak Cello Concerto (which is full of prominent clarinet solos). T=
he
cellist is Gregor Piatgorsky with Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia
Orchestra, recorded in 1946 and reissued in superb sound on Sony
Masterworks Heritage MHK 62876. The CD also has Piatigorsky playing
Bruch's Kol Nidrei (from 1947), which as far as I can tell has never been=

reissued after its initial appearance on 78s. The CD also has the
Saint-Saens Cello Concerto # 1 with Piatigorsky, Frederick Stock and the
Chicago Symphony (from 1940). All are top drawer performances by
Piatigorsky, particularly the Dvorak. This CD belongs in every
clarinetist's collection.
