My advice is that you find some composers you really like and start with that.
I had a similar problem as you with Jazz - for some reason I only ever came
across pieces I didn't particularily like....

Up to the age of 25 I was convinced I could never get the hang of Jazz (I must
admit that due to my earlier experiences I didn't try very hard either). Then
a friend brought a Louis Armstrong tape into work and I was hooked. Now I've
even started to write Jazz myself :) (Badly :)

The best thing to do is to listen to the radio a lot. Any type of music. If
you then find yourself humming along or clearly remembering phrases of the
piece afterwards - get a recording! If you can keep a piece of music in your
mind you're halfway there.

One CD I can thoroughly recommend if you like
- A diversity of styles
- Good singing
- Humorous music
- Catchy tunes (NOT elevator music, I assure you)

is 'Three Musical Fables' by John Rutter, performed by the Kings Singers. One
of my all-time favourites. The Wind In The Willows will never be the same
again...

Hope that helps

Frauke
