It is oftens stated that Oscar Oehler invented the concave curve on the
mouthpiece table and that it is envisaged for use with a string ligature.
However the only place I know where it is described carefully is in a French
publication definitely associated with a metal ligature. My source is
Prosper Mimart's article in the Lavignac encyclopaedia (1927) but the
article looks as though it might be lifted from his method which apparently
was published in 1911 but which I do not own. If anybody on the list owns
this method maybe she/he could check whether it does indeed have a picture
and discussion of the curved table. Nick
