When the file of subscribers to this list got zonked, a very good
discussion was brought to a premature close. It was the one on
which clarinet under what circumstances.
I can't remember all of the intelligent, articulate comments that
were brought forward in the marshalling of argumentation, but
I do remember Ed Lacy's pungent comments, Jonathan Cohler's
insightful perspective on the matter, Keith Koons thoughtful point
of asking about horn conventions, and Larry Liberson's many good
thoughts.
I'm not going to try and restore the discussion to its former
glory at this moment because there is a rhythm to this kind of
multiple person analysis, and once it's broken -- as it was
in our case -- it is very difficult to get it back again.
Maybe in the future we can toss the ideas around again, but for
the moment it has gone south, unfortunately.
As I remember, the discussion got started when someone said
that s/he didn't like the sound of the C clarinet, I asked why,
and the next thing you know good analytical thoughts were flying
in all directions.
Back to lurking.
