Thanks for your suggestions. I had purchased a new ligature to see if the
problem was simply a faulty one (and I was the unfortunate recipient). We
had bent the pars that touch the reed (seemingly where the problem
originated) and it seemed to work for a little but the problems reoccured.
The new one poses the same problems.

I'll try some of your methods and if they don't work maybe I'll have to look
into a different make of ligature.
