A variation on cutting out the middle of the Bonade Ligature is to use a
hand held grinder, or patient filing, to grind down the bars in the middle
of the ligature. This allows only the top and bottom of the bars to contact
the reed, which is the same as cutting out completely the middle, BUT
because there is metal left in the middle the ligature is more stable.

I have done this for 8 years and it's the best of all worlds for me. Like
most players I have a large collection of ligatures which were tryed out and
stored in the back of a desk drawer!
