When the reed vibrates, vibrational patterns are formed in the mouthpiece,
the ligature, the barrel and on down. That is why the material of the
mouthpiece,
the barrel and the ligature do make a difference. This difference may be too
subtle for the listener to determine, but I can feel the difference between
different mouthpiece materials(rubber, glass, wood), ligature
materials(platings,
plastics, fabrics) and even different barrel materials. Why don't you get
hold
of a gold plated Harrison ligature and a silver plated one and see if you don't
agree.
