ClarinetFest '97 Update

Sorry to be so delayed in posting a new ClarinetFest update. I was out of
town for the Memorial Day weekend and am just now climbing out from under
the pile of ClarinetFest Registrations that greeted me upon my return. We
are running slightly ahead of the expected number of CF registrations for
this time. Thanks to all who have sent their registrations in early! Also,
thanks to all who have sent in notes about how exciting the artist roster
looks. I want to share a most interesting note I received and also my
response to each point it raises.

TOP 10 REASONS NOT TO ATTEND CLARINETFEST

10. Who wants to go to the Texas dessert in the middle of the summer?

Lubbock is not in the dessert. Lubbock is located on the South Plains, the
award wining wine producing region of the state. While we don't claim to be
Paris, Lubbock has a relatively comfortable climate. If you want dessert,
try El Paso. Lubbock temperatures in summer average from highes in the low
90's and lowes in the low 60's. It can warm up above the century mark, but
this is the exception rather than the rule. If you are expecting cactus in
Lubbock, you will be disappointed. Instead you will find the Texas Tech
campus which has received numerous acclaims for its beautiful landscaping
and Spanish Mission-style architecture.

9. I hate clarinet!

Well, not much I can say.

8. Isn't there a militia group in West Texas trying to secede from the U.S.?

Not anymore. They are in jail. Try Montana (oops, please no offense Montanans).

7. I hate bass clarinet!

Well, ....

6. All they have in Texas are cowboys and oil wells!

Wrongo, bucko! In addition to our rich cultural heritage, we have two 52
week major symphony orchestras, 2 other full time symphonies, outstanding
opera and ballet companies, and numerous other fine art attractions and
excellent museums. And in addition to that, only 50 miles from Lubbock is
the COWGIRL Hall of Fame.

5. I hate alto clarinet!

Well, so do I.

4. It costs so much money to go to one of these things!

Nothing is cheap these days, but along with the ICA, we have worked very
hard to make ClarinetFest '97 as economical as possible for everyone. ICA
is YOUR professional organization and ClarinetFest is YOUR annual clarinet
festival. And besides, all expenses for attending ClarinetFest are tax
deductible! Attending ClarinetFest '97 will be money well spent.

3. I hate airplanes!

Do you get the impression that this person is rather particular? Lubbock is
easy to fly into with easy connections through Dallas-Fort Worth
International Airport. American Airlines, the official airline of
ClarinetFest '97, has special discounts for those flying to ClarinetFest.
Call our official travel agency, Premier Travel at 1-800-814-3336
(806-794-3397). Teri Jo Gilmore will help you book the most reasonably
priced tickets available. By the way, there are still many specials in
effect so ticket price may never be lower.

2. I can purchase CDs of all the music worth hearing that will be played at
ClarinetFest and enjoy it in my own living room instead of having to get
all dressed up and go to a concert.

Firstly, dress at ClarinetFests is casual, shorts and tank tops included if
you like. Secondly, there will be a lot of music performed that is
recorded. However, there will be an unprecidented number of premiere
performances of new works for clarinet at CF '97. Also, in addition to
clarinetists performing at CF '97 who have released recordings, there are
many great players who are not recorded that you will not otherwise have a
chance to hear. Finally, I have always believed that the most inspirational
and memorable performances are those experienced in the concert hall. While
recordings can capture many things about the music and performer, there is
nothing like a live performance.

And finally....

1. I would miss a week's worth of postings on Klarinet!

No you won't. We will place each day's postings on a special KLARINET
BULLETIN BOARD bulletin board. You won't miss a beat.

This was attached to a completed registration form. Complete your's today.
Feel free to include your own "top 10" if you like. I'm off to the Oklahoma
Clarinet Symposium tomorrow but will have a new update early next week.
Please see the following posting regarding the KLARINET gathering at
ClarinetFest '97.
