Dan the story about the Stravinsky pieces. Is it established for sure that
this Rufus Airie was transposing the piece he was playing on the "wrong"
clarinet? My experience of people playing them all on the same clarinet is
that the play what they see (i.e. they assume that there is no intended
pitch/key relationship between them). I find it hard to believe that Rufus
Airie (whoever he was) could have rehearsed it transposed and then switched
to playing it untransposed on a different instrument all on the same day.
But obviously if he played what he saw then one could argue (persuasively I
would add) that Stravinsky might have been sensitive to the pitch/key
relationship and not the instrumental tone color.
