Depends on where he lives/has lived - I have lived in Chicago
(where I had both a teacher who could direct me and the
sources to get any piece of music I wanted). I have also lived
in Ohio and Kentucky, where (partly due to money, partly due
to locale) when I did try to take lessons I spent a significant
chunk of lesson time showing my "teacher" alternate fingerings,
etc... and where the only music readily available was the Rubank
series. Luckily the Chicago experience came first, so I knew
what was available. Not everyone is so lucky.
