Is your book "edited" by someone? If I remember correctly,
Bellison edited some of them for Carl Fischer. Often breath marks (and
articulation/phrase
markings) are put in by the editor because he/she feels that they either
1) make the exercise more effective, 2) makes it more playable for the
targeted audience, 3) corrects a perceived deficiency in the original,
etc.
As a teacher, I usually disregard markings which seem patently
superfluous, such as those extra breath marks. Maybe someone once thought
they were useless oops, (I mean useful!)
but if they really get in the way, you can probably feel
little guilt in ignoring them. Just my $.02
