Information concerning the 1998 Composition Competition of the
International Clarinet Association is now on the ICA Home Page. Visit at

1997 ICA Composition Competition Announced

The 1997 Composition Competition produced 73 new works for clarinet and
string quartet. The winning composition was submitted by Andrew P.
McDonald of Quebec, Canada. Entitled _Music for the Open Air, Op.21_
(1990), Mr. McDonald will receive a $1000 prize and his work will be
performed at the 1997 ICA ClarinetFest in Lubbock, Texas on July 9th.

Vice-President of the Canadian League of Composers, Dr. McDonald is also
active as a concert guitarist, as artistic director of Ensemble Musica
Nova and as Professor of Composition and Theory at Bishop's University
in Lennoxville, Quebec.

Five finalists were awarded honorable mention: (in alphabetical order)

William Albringt (MI) for _Quintet for clarinet & string quartet_ (1987)
Chan Ka Nin (Ontario, Canada) for _The Disquiet_ (1997)
Michael Salamon (Austria) for _Drei Stucke fur Klarinette in B und
Streighquartett_
Daniel Schnyder (NY) for _Suite_
Rick Sowash (OH) for _Quintet for clarinet in A and strings_ (1995).

Jury members were:
