I have used a clarinet for the 2nd Brandenburg Concerto (J.S.Bach), and other
baroque trumpet pieces with very acceptable results. Casals used a soprano
sax in his Prades Festival recordings.

It sounded to me very much like a trumpet, particularly in the highest
octave, which is where it counts the most. It is also very much easier to
find a clarinet player, than a trumpet capable of the Brandenburg.

One of the works we like to play is the Bach Triple (violin) concerto, which
we do with flute, violin & clarinet. It probably would sound fine on three
clarinets, except that having the three different voices adds a dimension,
and makes it easier to hear the parts as written.
