I think you are on the right track. I found him on the ASCAP web site. He
is listed a co-composer of Bye Bye Blues as well as another well know
piece, American Patrol. His clarinet work is also listed there.
Unfortunately, I did not find any personal details.

I read your message today on the clarinet newsgroup. I'm not sure if my
sketchy information applies, but I'll try. Is the David Bennett to which
you refer David "Duke" Bennett who wrote Bye Bye Blackbird (or is it Bye
Bye Birdie?) If so, I know very little about him, except that he and I
share the same hometown, Ida Grove, IA, a little place in western Iowa,
about an hour from the Missouri River.
