Ya know, I am embarrased, but the name that comes to mind is Benny Goodman.
I'll tell you why. Hindemith wrote for him, Copland wrote for him,
Bernstein wrote for him. Name another clarinetist whom such important, and
varied composers wrote for. Also the jazz Goodman played was 20th century
clarinet music in a jazz idiom.

Here's an interesting thought for the list:
Anton Stadler was to Mozart, and Richard Muehlfeld was to Brahms
as ____________________ is to 20th Century clarinet music.
