Dan,

I apologize for the late timing and not being able to provide
specfic references, but I can suggest another area of investigation
that you may not have hit.

Because of the similarity of fingerings and range between
alto recorders (more generally recorders pitched in F) and the
range of the soprano (possibly tenor?) chalumeau (often pitched
in F), you may find some additional suggestive information in
the recorder tutors of the Baroque.
