Mozart always went where the money was. He was very sensitive to
the popular thing. For example, his Paris symphony contained
a very special orchestral device called the "coup d'archet" because
it was very popular in Paris. He himself thought that the idea
was rather mundane but if the Parisians liked it he would write it.
There are letters from him to his father on this very item.

In effect, I think that Scott and Sheri have correctly assessed
the situation, though one is, of course, never certain in this
kind of speculation.

I once said the same thing on a national radio show about Mozart
during the bicentennial year. I was asked what Mozart would be
doing if he were alive to day. My answer was that he would be
a rock guitarist though he would undoubtedly put cotton in his
ears. He was very sensitive to loud sounds and cried the first
time he heard a trumpet. Think of what 10,000 watts would do to
him.
