Music and literature both have in common that they can range from
the tediously cerebral to the mind-numbing schlock; it all depends what
you want to accomplish. In the middle of these extremes is not (in my
opinion) the "commercial", but the "accessible". If good music/literature
becomes commercially successful, it is because it is accessible to a wide
range of people; just because music is accepted by the masses doesn't mean
it's schlock! Remember: sometimes "the masses" is us!
I have, for some time, felt that if Mozart were alive today, he
would be writing film scores.
