Yes. You can check out "Fundamentals of Musical Acoustics" by Arthur H.
Benade (Dover, 1990) or "Music, Speech, Audio" by William J. Strong and
George R. Plitnik (Soundprint, Provo, UT, 1992) for many references. I
believe that some of the fundamental experimental work in this area was
done in the early 60s by John Backus. But there were several others
including Arthur Benade who was one of the real outstanding champions of
the physics of music (and a clarinetist himself).
