wow. that sounds really interesting. i'd love to read your work when it
becomes available in december. please let us all know how to get ahold of
it.
i did a short paper on the history of the clarinet last semester (no big
deal- just undergrad stuff) and dealt a lot with the period you're
discussing. your footnote makes sense to me and i agree with the points
people have made about how clarinets pitched in certain keys may have
sounded better (or captured a specific mood) in some written keys. the
only thing that i could argue with (and this is being really picky) is
that since Mozart wrote in d-flat twice, according to your notes, it would
be unfavorable to arpeggiate the dominant chord (Ab). also, although the
clarinet had professionals who used it regularly by the time Mozart wrote
most of his compositions for it, maybe Mozart was taking into consideration
that there were a lot of amateurs learning the instrument (he wrote his
music for Stadler, but what about Mozart's students and their colleagues?)
and maybe a few oboists who still doubled on it regularly. perhaps the
conservative key signatures were used in their favor? of course, this is
all probably irrelevant, but it's just a few passing thoughts.
