Gary,
My Bb clarinet is absolutely normal, but my A constantly gets
stares. There is an alternate fingering for the Ab/Eb and an alternate
for C#/G# (whose hole is not to the side but in line with the finger
holes). I have to admit, that I do not use the latter, but the former
often comes in handy (especially when composers have no clue how to be
nice to clarinettists). The A is a Buffet, which I bought from Albert
Alphin several years ago when I finally decided to seriously start being
an amateur.
