I've been playing clarinet, off and on, since 1963. I've used just about
every ligature that's been available...including string while I was a
college student (I was REALLY weird then). The ligature I keep going back
to is the same Luyben white plastic that I have had since 1968. However,
you should all keep your eyes peeled for a metal ligature that Boosey and
Hawkes put with their clarinets back in the 50's and 60's. It is rather
heavy guage metal and has the letters "BH" cut out on the top. It is not
high-tech in the least, but it responds well and sounds really good. It may
be nothing more than the thickness of the metal and the way it is cut out
that makes it worth trying.
