In regard to which direction a metal ligasture should face. The purpose of
the ligature is to hold a reed in place with out allowing it to shift. The
ideal ligature will hold a reed in place with the least amount of pressure
possible. The reed's vibrations do not stop at the end of the vamp but go
all the way down its length.. When using a metal ligature it is recommended
by many professionals and teachers to place the screws on the oposite side of
the reed. If the screws were on top of the reed the amount of pressure
exerted on the reed in unequal. The vibrations may not continue in a smooth
path way across the entire reed. However with the screws on the oposite side
the amount of pressure on the reed in more evenly distrubted and allow the
vibrations to travel more evenly and freely down the entire length of the
ree. Fo a much more detailed explanatioon of ligatures check out " The
Clarinet and Clarinet Playing" by David Pino.
