I agree with Ed. I graduated from high school 31 years ago and had a very
positive experience. Our marching band was a separate class period (counted
as p.e.) so it didn't take time away from concert band and orchestra. Our
band director was not fond of football shows so he put in minimal effort (I
swear that one year we did a variation on the same show all season). He
enjoyed parades more and that was where we put our efforts. But we marched
in only four parades finishing up at the Long Beach (California) Band
Review in late November (which the band won when I was a senior and the two
following years). The rest of the year we concentrated on (real) music.

(I went to a university without a marching band.)
