Marion Rutty asks where I purchased my E-flat. I was working in a small
music store in the Baltimore metro area and happened to be in their
warehouse searching out stock, when I came upon the e-fer on a top
shelf. I asked if I could take it with me and got a yes. It had many
checks in the bore and needed a repad, but when I played it the
intonation was relatively good. It had flat notes at the top of the
range, but that is to be expected. I asked how much they were asking,
and they said $700 (1977). Because of the condition of the bore, they
accepted my offer of $500. I took it to the e-flat player in the Naval
Academy Band, who just happened to be the band's tech.
His name is Steve Fowler and he is subscribed to this
list, I think, although I haven't seen any correspondence from him
in a while. He repadded my horn in cork (it still has these same pads),
re-cut my tone holes and fit a new mouthpiece (David Hite, which I
love) and the horn plays like a dream. It has visited Phil Muncy one
time to have the side Eb-Bb key adjusted. Steve wasn't available and I
needed the horn pronto. I am not a monster player by any stretch of the
imagination, but people do come looking for me to play for them, so I
must be doing something right.
