Peter,

The best stuff I've found for washing and softening a chamois swab
(I'm assuming you are using a chamois swab) is to hand launder it in
a solution of water and Murphy's Liquid Gold or similar cleaning
product. Liquid Gold is a sudsing cleaner designed to clean grimy
woodwork. It seems to contain detergent and oil which you wouldn't
think would mix. It will work on the most disgustingly crispy,
smelly swab you can think of.
