These must be very old parts indeed. Band music of yesterday had Repieno or
Repiano parts for cornet or/and clarinet to cover up for important
instruments likely to be missing in the local band, which used to be quite
small. Repieno parts were "filling-in" parts played in full or in part as
the conductor decided. Basically, Repiano parts were there to secure that
the melody or important harmonics would come through no matter what
instruments were present. In modern band music, strands not to be left out
are explicited cued into various parts by the composer or arranger and no
longer extracted to form a Repieno part. The use of Repieno parts in this
context is different from that of the Baroque, although the notion has
something in common.
