It sounds to me like the orchestration of a Baroque concerto grosso, with
the concerto sections and the ripieno sections (ripieno being like
"tutti"). Am I remembering this correctly? (it's been a while since I
took Baroque history!). So, for example, when the solo violin is finished
with his "concerto" passage,he will continue to play, joined by the first
violins in the orchestra (the "ripieno" section).

I don't think I did a very good job of explaining that. Check Schirmer or
Grout for a better description!!

Sounds like a neat piece -- and I hadn't heard of this group before now.
