Thanks to Roger Shilcock for the clarification on "horsetails." I was
thinking of "scouring rush" (Equisetum arvense), not "Dutch rush," which
may well be another similar species, E. hyemale, as Roger pointed out.
It (E. hyemale) has longer stems and less branching, but I suspect
either type would work. As he said, they both have silicon in their
stems, which gives a nice abrasive action for cleaning your pots and
pans or shaping your reeds, as the need arises. There are other species
around too. And yes, they are even older than the dinosaurs, going back
to around 400,000,000 years ago.
