It is properly called Equisetum arvense (should be italicized or
underlined, and note the placement of capital letters). It is an ancient
plant that predates most, if not all, of the dinosaurs. It's almost
universal in distribution, growing in damp, sandy soils in shaded areas.
These things used to grow as tall as trees, but that was before my time
(several hundred million years ago).
