I used to use pad savers and thought they were great; however, my clarinet
professor made me throw them away. It seems that they're worse in the
long run because the "fuzz" that they're made of gets into the tone holes
and only causes more problems. The fuzz only makes it harder when you're
trying to do a thorough cleaning job. (taking the keys off and such...)
The best method for cleaning "gunk" out of the clarinet is a good,
thorough swabbing. Preferably with a silk swab.
