Hi Ian -
There is a product called "lip savers" - kind of small waxed papers - I
belive I remember them marketed by LeBlanc... they went over the lower
teeth. I used them some in High School - then I got my dentist to lightly
sand my lower teeth & didn't need them after that! That was around 1958,
they still might be available.

Boxers wax has been used by some of my students (especially Brass players)
with orthedontic "Braces" on their teeth to help with that transition.
Boxers wax whould peel off of the braces without leaving particles in the
braces, but I'm not sure that it would work over the teeth? Maybe worth a
try?
