This is an interesting discussion because until about 2 years ago I
didn't know that I should seal the reed with my finger and never had
problems with reeds.
I began sealing them and have not been happy with the results! I
have decided to go back to my old method of reed preparation, which is
breaking in reeds by playing them for 5 minutes at a time for several
days, then doing any minor adjustments and repeating the process of 5
minute playings for a few more days. This seem to produce a longer
lasting reed for me.
