Mozart's "Waltz Fantasy" is an excellent piece. Short, not too =
difficult, and it has a cadenza that, although composed of easy =
arpeggios, gives the player a good ego boost. I *think* it's published =
by Chester, but I'm not positive. There's also the Baermann Adagio, =
which, although difficult, provides a good opportunity to introduce some =
important concepts. It's very beautiful, in fact it's my favorite piece. =
Jeanjean's Arabesque isn't bad either, though a bit more difficult than =
the other two. But it's well worth the extra work, because it makes a =
fine contest/audition piece, as it's relatively short and sounds a good =
deal more difficult than it actually is. And it's never too early to =
start on Weber, with either the Variations Op. 33 or the Concertino. =
(Well, never is a strong word, but I'm sure you get my drift.) That's =
about all I can think of now. Good luck with your students.
