I've been applying to grad schools recently myself, and I did take the
general GRE but that was only because the schools I applied to required
it. FInd out from the schools whether they require it - if they do take
it, if not then a GRE won't help you unless you do really really well! ie
over 600 in each section! I also found that the music portion isn't
required by most schools, and my not taking it has not hurt my chances
at the schools I've applied to! Good luck!
