It is with some considerable regret that I announce to all of you
that I turned 58 today. I had been trying to avoid it
through various forms of denial but it finally crept up and seized
me, as you might guess when I was the most defenseless -- asleep.
When I awoke this morning my first thought was, "Agggh! March 30!"
I thought that I could hear the soft admonishment of father time,
"I don't know why you're being such a baby about it. Haven't
I warned you many times about the inevitability of this day?"

Be that as it may, my birthday present to all of you is awaiting
on my Web page: the .MUS and MIDI files of Hummel's Quartet
in Eb major for clarinet and strings.

I have also added the .MUS and MIDI files for Tico Tico no Fuba
(Tico Tico in the Corn), trio for clarinets, with proper
attributions to the composer Zeqhuinha de Abreu and arranger
Fernando Silveira. There are two MIDI files: Fernando's with
good articulation written in, and mine (without) in which I've
seen to it that Tico Tico comes to an appropriately corny end.
