I know of three recordings of the Milhaud Concerto:
Cybelia CY703 (LP) Maurice Gabai (w/ Milhaud, Suite for
Violin and Orchestra
Koch Schwann 3-1035-2 (CD) Eduard Brunner (w/ Milhaud,
Scaramouch; Hindemith, Concerto; Copland, Concerto
Concord Concerto CCD-42043 (CD) Ken Peplowski (w/ Lutoslawski, Dance
Preludes; and other (interesting) works by Davis/Gillespie/Parker,
Ellington, Djurov, Coleman, and Strayhorn/Hamilton
The Brunner and Peplowski are both recent. The Gabai may have been
re-released on CD. If I could only have one, in a close call, it would
be the Brunner.
By the way, I believe the quote is from Jack Brymer and I believe he
said that the concerto would have to wait for further evolution of the
instrument or the human hand. He's probably given up on evolution of
the clarinetist's brain ;^)
