This is a very interesting thread since I was recently discussing what
appears to be the same issue with another clarinet player. One of the
other firsts in our concert band (a "real" musician - i.e. he plays
for a living) was telling me that he had found that a "heavier"
ligature (defined as metal when I asked) gives better projection. Is
this a common observation?
I'm currently using a Luyben plastic ligature -
after that conversation and the one on the list, I'm on my way to the
music store to check out a couple of other ligatures (there is the
potential problem that the local music store _is_ Luyben's!).
Regarding the potential for the reed slipping using the plastic
ligature - Until I figured out that you really had to tighten the
screws on the ligature down _hard_ , I had that happen a few times.
(And I do mean hard - unless you have strong fingers, you may not be
able to get it there without using both hands...)
