Subj: cleaning out the register vent
Date: Thu, 27 Mar 1997 10:52:36 -0500

All the talk about C clarinet stuffiness reminded me of something my
private lesson teacher did to my clarinet yesterday.

He unscrewed the register key and took it off of the clarinet. He then
inserted a very small, thin pipe cleaner into the register vent (the tube
that the register key covers) and worked it in and out a couple of times.
When I looked inside my clarinet, I saw that a little bit of dust had
fallen out of the register vent. He said that that dust was lint from the
swab passing through so many times, and recommended that I clean the
register vent at least twice a year. If you swab more frequently, you'd
probably have to clean more frequently, though.

Anyhow, he said that one of his students really benefited from this
procedure-- her third line B flats were very stuffy before, and this made
them a lot clearer.

Have a good day!
