Responding to Simon Aldrich's thread.

Does he do this to A's as well as B flats? Back in the early 80's, prior to
Boosey + Hawke's takeover, Buffet made some pretty bad A clarinets. You
definitely were held back when playing, even more than you do on most A's.
Yamaha had just come out with a top of the line model 72 and many players went
to the A of this model. It seemed to play much more like the B flat. One of
the big differences with this instrument was that the register vent was about
4 mm higher. it also had a shorter vent tube. The tone would not ghost as
much when playing softly and tonguing in the high clarion register.

Unfortunately these instruments had a shallow tone and never did that well in
the market. Although I think Dave Shiffrin played on a Yamaha A. I had a set
that I liked very much but sold it after about 5 years.
