Dirk,

Although I am not as familiar with Brunner as are others on the
list, I can tell you this much. He was born in Basel and, as another
Klarinet correspondent reported, he studied with Louis Cahuzac.

My copy of the Francaix Clarinet Quintet is inscribed by the
composer, "Pour mon ami, Eduard Brunner," suggesting Brunner as the
commissioner of the composition.

I would also like to tell you about a remarkable recording made
by Brunner, namely, the "Piano Concerto" by Joseph Suder. Not a
conventional concerto, the work is subtitled "Adagio and Rondo for
Piano, Solo Clarinet, and Orchestra." The pianist is Margaret
Hohenrieder, and the orchestra is the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen
Rundfunks conducted by Jun'ichi Hirokami. The CD is on the Calig label
(CAL 50888).
