I agree completely, in fact, I suspect we are saying the same thing, but in
different words that are causing some confusion.

I was merely pointing out that when you wrote

"so you would write D on the second space above the bass

You would not get an octave below middle C, you would get middle C.

the parts that currently come through you play bass clef down a 2nd, treble
down a 9th. When you have a part with both clefs you read the treble up an
octave, so that everything sounds down a 2nd.

This agrees with all the sources you have quoted, and I hope together we
have solved the confusion.
